Bob Hupp had become Syracuse Stage's new Artistic Director and wanted to make a significant impact by directing the first show of the season. Although I knew Bob from the Arkansas Repertory Theatre, this would be our first collaboration as designer and director. The show is a beautiful and classic piece of theatre, and I recognized how important this production was to Bob. Therefore, my scenic design needed to be spectacular, taking the audience on a fantastic journey to 17th-century France. No pressure there!
The set needed to accommodate the play's nearly 20 locations as the action shifts from the streets of Paris to secret rooms in royal chambers.
In addition to allowing for swift transitions between multiple locations, one of the most essential elements would be the fight choreography by DC Wright. After all, what is The Three Musketeers without an exciting sword fight? This was our second time working together, which made our process much easier. DC referred to my set as a wonderful gymnasium that would allow him to showcase the physical skills of the cast, especially with the grand stairs that were vast, sturdy, and beautifully detailed.
Enjoy the sketches, 3-D renderings, hand-painted watercolor renderings, and, of course, images of our glorious show. I'm so proud of this!
